Cosmetic surgeon Dr. David Robbins can use liposuction in Des Moines to tighten and redefine the shape of your figure. Dr. Robbins has performed over 2,000 liposuction procedures as of 2024. Liposuction is one of the most popular procedures performed at Des Moines Plastic Surgery.

Traditional Liposuction

Liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the U.S., and for good reason. If you’re struggling with stubborn excess fat, the surgery can help you reduce excess fat and thereby streamline your body shape

When to Consider Liposuction

Liposuction can reduce unwanted pockets of fat from almost anywhere on the body. You may want to consider liposuction if you:

  • Have deposits of fat that have been resistant to diet and exercise
  • Have firm, elastic skin in the areas planned for treatment
  • Are not intending on losing or gaining a significant amount of weight
  • You are healthy, a non-smoker, and at or close to your ideal weight

The best candidates for surgery are healthy and possess clear goals and expectations. Before considering liposuction, it’s important to note that lipo is a refinement tool, not a weight loss tool. You should be at or near a healthy body weight in advance of surgery. This will give you the best results long term.

Fat Reduction Alternatives

Lipo isn’t always necessary. For many patients, implementing a healthy diet and exercise program may be enough to achieve desired results. You should exhaust these options before turning to liposuction.

If you are looking for an alternative to traditional liposuction, we offer several other options. Smartlipo is similar to traditional liposuction, but uses a laser to tighten the skin along with fat reduction. Smart lipo is best for small areas. For more information, please visit our Smartlipo page.

A couple other popular nonsurgical solutions are CoolSculpting and Exilis. CoolSculpting freezes unwanted pockets of exercise-resistant body fat. During the 12 weeks following the treatment the body naturally discards the fat. Exilis, another option for nonsurgical fat reduction heats the fat cells, but also tightens the skin for an added benefit. 4 to 6 treatments are necessary for optimal results. There is no downtime and no surgery involved with either of these two fat reduction solutions.

During a consultation with Dr. Robbins, he will ensure that patients are good candidates for treatment. Price, preparation, recovery, and more can all be discussed.

quotes

The liposuction and tummy tuck I had turned out fantastic! Dr Robbins and his whole staff were very friendly and caring. I certainly picked the correct surgeon for my liposuction and tummy tuck. I had tried everything from exercising consistently and trying all of the diets out there and still no results for my very large protruding abdomen and back flanks. The results from my surgery were absolutely awesome.

Liposuction Frequently Asked Questions

Surgery will take place in Des Moines Plastic Surgery™’s own fully accredited in-office operating room. Liposuction is an outpatient procedure that requires general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, depending on the size and location of your treatment areas. Surgery can last anywhere from 1 to 4 hours.

Small areas of liposuction on the neck, thighs and lower abdomen can be performed awake with light sedation and local anesthesia.

Once you’re comfortable, a tumescent solution will be administered beneath the surface of your skin. This solution (which combines saline, lidocaine and epinephrine) is used to minimize bleeding, swelling and discomfort.

Dr. Robbins will then insert a thin suctioning cannula into small incisions near the treatment areas. Using gentle back-and-forth motions, he will breakup and suction out the unwanted fat.

Ensuring that you have a safe and comfortable recovery is one of Dr. Robbins’ primary goals. Swelling and bruising is very common. Mild to moderate discomfort is common during the first few days of recovery from liposuction. After that, some tenderness may remain for another 2 to 4 weeks.

Oral pain medication and cold compresses should be enough to keep you comfortable during recovery. Compression garments are important to wear after surgery and will be provided by Des Moines Plastic Surgery™. Final results will be apparent 3 months after surgery.

Your results will be long-lasting, but not necessarily permanent. Natural aging, pregnancy or any significant weight changes may alter your results. Maintaining a stable weight is the best way to achieve long-lasting results.

As with any surgery, this method of fat removal has risks and you should carefully consider them before electing surgery. Some risks include contour irregularities, fluid accumulation, numbness, infection or blood clots. Dr. Robbins, at Des Moines Plastic Surgery™, will discuss all of the risks at length during your cosmetic consultation.

The price of liposuction is determined based on several factors. Among these factors are the amount of fatty tissue removed, the length of the procedure, and the size and number of treated areas.
