What makes you a good candidate for the procedure you want?

When you are considering cosmetic plastic surgery, we believe the most important part of the process is proper doctor selection. Ultimately, the best way to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for cosmetic plastic surgery is to request a consultation with us and discuss your goals.

The term “surgery” includes everything from the anesthesia to the operation, to postoperative recovery. Due to this, deciding if cosmetic surgery is right for you is usually not a straightforward answer and will vary from guest to guest. In fact, there are a number of variables to consider in this decision.

YOU MUST BE IN GOOD OVERALL HEALTH

Most healthy and well-informed patients are excellent candidates for most surgeries. Any underlying medical problems you may have, your general health and lifestyle, the “concern” being addressed, the magnitude of the surgical “solution” and the anticipated outcome all play a role in determining if cosmetic plastic surgery is right for you.

YOU MUST BE A NON-SMOKER

Smoking can complicate both cosmetic plastic surgery procedures and recovery time. For these reasons, Dr. Robbins and the Des Moines Plastic Surgery team will only proceed with patients who are non-smokers. If you are a smoker, you may be eligible to be considered a candidate if you quit smoking 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after your cosmetic plastic surgery procedure.

YOU HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

During a consultation with Dr. Robbins, you will discuss your goals and he can advise on what procedure would be most applicable, and what results you can expect. Result expectations from cosmetic surgery are going to be based on each patient’s individual, unique physique and goals.

PREGNANCY

Pregnancy can change things aesthetically – we recommend your consultation appointment date is at least 6 months after you deliver.

BODY MASS INDEX

Patient health and safety is of utmost importance to us. We do not operate on any patient who has a BMI (Body Mass Index) higher than 34. Calculate yours below:

Many guests that do not qualify for surgery yet due to their BMI have optioned for our medical weight loss and weight health medications. Learn more about this option here.

READINESS TO HAVE SURGERY

While we thoroughly support patients being proactive in their research about cosmetic surgery, if you’re not ready to have surgery within the next 6-12 months, you’re probably not ready for a consultation yet. During a consultation you will receive a plan for your surgery and a lot can change outside of that 6 to 12 month timeframe. We want to ensure you’re receiving the most current plan and your health and circumstances are accurate.

Let’s figure out if a consult is your next best step.

If not, we’ll point you in the right direction!
