Learning About Breast Implant Exchange

Breast implant exchange or revision breast surgery is commonly performed by Dr. Robbins at Des Moines Plastic Surgery™. Breast implant exchange is most commonly performed in women who:

  • desire new implants
  • desire a different size from their current implant size
  • have implants that were placed many years ago and the implants need to be replaced because they have developed hardness (called capsular contracture) or have ruptured.

Should I Replace Them With Saline Or Silicone Implants?

The most common reason for implant exchange is replacing saline implants with new silicone gel implants which typically provide a more natural look and feel to the breasts. Saline rippling, firmness, and overall dissatisfaction with the appearance of the breasts are common reasons to exchange for silicone. Dr. Robbins and his staff can assist you with your concerns and help you select the procedure and implants that are right for you. Dr. Robbins has years of experience with breast surgery, particularly in the area of breast augmentation and breast implant exchange and revision.

What Can I Expect?

Breast implant exchange typically involves using the original scar for access to the implant. General anesthesia is required to remove the old implants and replace new ones. The implants are removed and the internal “capsule” is removed and modified as well. The new implants are prepared and inserted in the original, now modified, pocket. In some cases, the pocket location (above or below the muscle) can be adjusted, and also the minor lifting of the loose skin can be accomplished as well. The recovery time is much faster with implant exchange compared to the original implant surgery because the skin and chest muscles have previously been stretched from the original implants. Dr. Robbins performs numerous breast and body contouring procedures each week in the in-office operating suite at his Des Moines facility. Dr. Robbins performs breast augmentations, as well as breast lifts, breast reductions, and many other plastic surgery procedures.

How Much Does Breast Implant Exchange Cost?

The cost of Breast Implant Exchange varies because it is a highly individualized surgery tailored for each patient. The overall price may include anesthesia, operating room facilities, new breast implants, and other related expenses. Additional tests and imaging may also add to your total.
