If you are looking for a non-surgical solution for sagging skin around the lower eyes, we offer a skin-tightening procedure called Exilis. Exilis works on any area of the face. The entire face and neck can be treated at one time for an overall skin-tightening effect. Under-eye areas can be treated alone to help reduce under-eye skin laxity and bags under the eyes. The neck and jowls are the most common face areas treated. The results are truly amazing for a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure. To learn more about this amazing non-surgical treatment, please visit our Skin Tightening page.

When To Consider Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can be customized to address your specific areas of concern. You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have bags and puffiness around your eyes
  • Have loose skin, wrinkles, or fine lines around your eyes

Eyelid surgery is ideal for patients with eyes that appear chronically sad, tired, or fatigued. As a general rule, the best candidates are in good health and possess realistic expectations. Though most of our patients are 35 years of age or older, surgery can be performed on adults of all ages. The best way to find out if surgery is right for you is to schedule a cosmetic consultation with Dr. David Robbins. During your cosmetic consultation, you will be able to ask questions, feel comfortable with Dr. Robbins and his staff, and talk about your goals for facial rejuvenation.

Eyelid Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

At Des Moines Plastic Surgery™, your surgery and all your appointments are conveniently located at our office in West Des Moines, Iowa. We have a fully accredited operating room located at our office which provides privacy and continuity of care. Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure that requires general anesthesia or intravenous sedation or in some circumstances, local anesthesia alone. Dr. Robbins will make precise incisions just below your lower lashes (for lower eyelid surgery) and/or in the natural folds of your upper lids (for upper eyelid surgery).

Through these incisions, Dr. Robbins will be able to remove excess skin and fat. Following surgery, all incisions will be secured with small sutures for minimal scarring.

In some cases, the incisions are only made on the inside of the lower eyelids with no external incision. For the upper eyelids, the incisions will be in the natural folds of the upper lids.

Yes. The time necessary for your recovery will ultimately depend on your body’s natural healing abilities, but most patients feel comfortable resuming work and light physical activities within 10 days. When creating a schedule for your time off from work, it’s important to note that noticeable swelling and bruising may persist for 1 to 2 weeks.

It’s normal to experience some soreness and tightness around your eyes for the first few days. This discomfort can be controlled using a combination of prescription pain medication and cold compresses.

Incisions made during upper and lower eyelid surgery are concealed within the natural contours of your eyelids. Some scarring may be visible following surgery, but this will gradually fade and flatten over the course of a few months.

Like all surgical procedures, eyelid surgery does carry risks. We will discuss these risks with you in our office during your consultation and/or pre-op appointment. Some risks may include adverse reactions to anesthesia, bleeding, infection, asymmetry or undesirable results.
