Eyelid Surgery in Des Moines

Refresh and rejuvenate your appearance with eyelid surgery at Des Moines Plastic Surgery™. Both Dr. David Robbins and Dr. Hector Marcano are board-certified plastic surgeons with extensive expertise in performing eyelid surgery, also known as a blepharoplasty. This transformative procedure can help you achieve a more youthful and rested look.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids. As we age, the delicate skin around the eyes can lose elasticity, leading to:

  • Drooping or sagging upper eyelids
  • Puffy bags under the eyes
  • Excess skin that can impair vision

Blepharoplasty addresses these concerns by removing excess skin, tightening muscles, and repositioning fat for a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery offers numerous benefits, including:

  • A more youthful and alert appearance
  • Reduction in puffiness and under-eye bags
  • Improved vision by removing excess skin from the upper eyelids
  • Enhanced self-confidence

Whether you’re looking to correct functional issues or simply want to rejuvenate your eyes, blepharoplasty can deliver natural-looking, long-lasting results.

Meet Our Surgeons

At Des Moines Plastic Surgery™, our eyelid surgery procedures are performed by two highly skilled and experienced plastic surgeons:

  • Dr. David Robbins: A quadruple-board-certified plastic surgeon with a reputation for precision and artistry in facial procedures.
  • Dr. Hector Marcano: A board-certified plastic surgeon known for his attention to detail and commitment to achieving natural, beautiful results.

With their combined expertise, you can trust that your eyelid surgery will be customized to your unique needs and aesthetic goals.

The Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Blepharoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery. Here’s what the procedure involves:

  1. Upper Eyelid Surgery: Removes excess skin and tightens underlying muscles to reduce sagging and improve vision.
  2. Lower Eyelid Surgery: Addresses under-eye bags and smooths wrinkles by removing or repositioning fat and tightening the skin.

Your surgeon will create precise incisions in natural creases or hidden areas to ensure minimal scarring and a seamless result.

Recovery and Results

Recovery times vary, but most patients can expect the following:

  • First few days: Swelling and bruising are common but manageable with cold compresses and prescribed medications.
  • 1-2 weeks: Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and normal activities.
  • Full results: Swelling resolves over several weeks, revealing a smoother, rejuvenated eye area.

Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.

Combining Eyelid Surgery with Other Procedures

For enhanced facial rejuvenation, eyelid surgery can be combined with complementary treatments, such as:

  • Brow Lift: Elevates drooping eyebrows and smooths forehead lines.
  • Facelift: Addresses sagging skin and enhances facial contours.
  • Laser Skin Resurfacing: Improves skin texture and reduces fine lines around the eyes.

Your surgeon will discuss these options during your consultation to create a comprehensive plan tailored to your goals.

Eyelid Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

At Des Moines Plastic Surgery™, your surgery and all your appointments are conveniently located at our office in West Des Moines, Iowa. We have a fully accredited operating room located at our office which provides privacy and continuity of care. Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure that requires general anesthesia or intravenous sedation or in some circumstances, local anesthesia alone. During your surgery your board-certified plastic surgeon will make precise incisions just below your lower lashes (for lower eyelid surgery) and/or in the natural folds of your upper lids (for upper eyelid surgery).

These incisions will allow your surgeon to remove excess skin and fat. Following surgery, all incisions will be secured with small sutures for minimal scarring.

In some cases, the incisions are only made on the inside of the lower eyelids with no external incision. For the upper eyelids, the incisions will be in the natural folds of the upper lids.

Yes. The time necessary for your recovery will ultimately depend on your body’s natural healing abilities, but most patients feel comfortable resuming work and light physical activities within 10 days. When creating a schedule for your time off from work, it’s important to note that noticeable swelling and bruising may persist for 1 to 2 weeks.

It’s normal to experience some soreness and tightness around your eyes for the first few days. This discomfort can be controlled using a combination of prescription pain medication and cold compresses.

Incisions made during upper and lower eyelid surgery are concealed within the natural contours of your eyelids. Some scarring may be visible following surgery, but this will gradually fade and flatten over the course of a few months.

Like all surgical procedures, eyelid surgery does carry risks. We will discuss these risks with you in our office during your consultation and/or pre-op appointment. Some risks may include adverse reactions to anesthesia, bleeding, infection, asymmetry or undesirable results.
