What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance and function of the nose. It can address concerns such as:

  • A hump or bump on the bridge
  • A crooked or asymmetrical nose
  • Wide or flared nostrils
  • A bulbous or drooping nasal tip
  • Breathing difficulties due to a deviated septum or nasal obstructions

By customizing the procedure to your goals, our surgeons ensure results that complement your facial features while maintaining a natural appearance.

Why Choose Our Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons?

Choosing an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon is crucial for achieving the best rhinoplasty outcomes. Our team of highly trained surgeons has extensive experience in both cosmetic and functional nasal surgeries, utilizing advanced techniques to minimize downtime and enhance recovery.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty with Our Experts:

  • Personalized approach – Every nose is unique, and we tailor each procedure to your aesthetic and functional needs.
  • State-of-the-art techniques – We utilize advanced surgical methods, including open and closed rhinoplasty, to achieve optimal results.
  • Enhanced confidence – A well-proportioned nose can improve overall facial balance and boost self-esteem.
  • Functional improvements – For patients struggling with breathing issues, rhinoplasty can enhance airflow and nasal function.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. Depending on your specific needs, the surgery may involve:

  • Open Rhinoplasty: An incision is made at the base of the nose for greater visibility and precision in reshaping nasal structures.
  • Closed Rhinoplasty: Incisions are made inside the nostrils, resulting in no external scars and a faster recovery.

The procedure typically takes 1-3 hours, and patients can return home the same day.

Recovery and Results

After surgery, mild swelling and bruising are common but subside within a few weeks. Most patients can return to work and normal activities within 1-2 weeks. Full results develop over several months as swelling gradually diminishes, revealing a more refined and harmonious nasal appearance.

Am I a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if you:

  • Are unhappy with the size, shape, or function of your nose
  • Have a fully developed nose (typically 16+ years old)
  • Are in good overall health with realistic expectations

During your consultation, our surgeons will discuss your goals, evaluate your nasal structure, and create a customized surgical plan tailored to your needs.

Nose Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

At Des Moines Plastic Surgery™, nose surgery is an outpatient procedure that typically requires general anesthesia. Once you’ve been placed under anesthesia in our fully accredited operating room, Dr. Robbins will either make a small incision across the base of your nose (known as open rhinoplasty) or within your nostrils (known as closed rhinoplasty).

Through these incisions, Dr. Robbins can reduce or augment your nose, depending on your cosmetic or medical needs. Once the surgery is complete, Dr. Robbins will apply a nasal splint and nasal supports to hold your new shape during the recovery.

When you wake up from surgery, your face will feel swollen and bruised. You should plan to spend the first couple of days resting in bed with your head elevated. Most patients are able to resume work and light physical activity within a week of surgery. It’s important to remember that noticeable facial swelling and bruising may be present for a couple of weeks.

Most swelling and bruising will subside within one month of surgery. From there, some residual swelling, noticeable only to you and Dr. Robbins, may last for 6 months. You may need to wait up to a full year before your final results are visible.

Some dermal and soft tissue fillers may be used to provide subtle corrections to the shape of your nose. However, it’s important to note that these products only provide temporary results. Repeated treatments will be needed to maintain results. Several kinds of dermal and soft tissue fillers are available at Des Moines Plastic Surgery™.

Before considering nose surgery, it’s important to understand that there are risks associated with all surgical procedures. Dr. Robbins will discuss the risks associated with nose surgery during your cosmetic consultation. Some risks may include but are not limited to, infection, adverse reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, numbness, swelling, and scarring.
